A New Chapter, Rooted in Home

There are seasons in life that change the way we see everything.

Over the past year, I stepped away from real estate while I went through cancer treatment. During that time, my world became smaller and quieter—but in many ways, my understanding of home became deeper.

Home was no longer simply the place where I lived. It was where I rested, healed, worried, hoped, and began imagining what might come next. It reminded me that a home is much more than bedrooms, square footage, or a list of features. It is the place that holds us when life changes.

As I began thinking about returning to real estate, I knew I did not want to come back and do everything exactly as I had before. I wanted my work to feel more personal, more useful, and more connected to the places and people I care about.

That is why I created Living Near Durham NC—and why I am writing Kerry’s Corner.

I grew up in Durham, spent my teenage years in Hillsborough, married a Roxboro native, and have called Roxboro home for more than thirty-six years. Each place has shaped me differently.

These communities are connected by more than roads. They are tied together by family histories, familiar buildings, country landscapes, local traditions, and people who care deeply about where they live.

Through Living Near Durham NC, I want to help people understand those connections. I want to share the character of our towns, the stories tucked inside familiar places, the landscapes we pass every day, and the details that make one community feel entirely different from another.

This is not simply about helping someone find a house. It is about helping them discover where they might feel at home.

Kerry’s Corner will be a place for those stories. We will explore Durham, Hillsborough, Roxboro, Mebane, Bahama, Rougemont, Hyco Lake, Mayo Lake, and the quieter roads between them.

I am grateful to be beginning again. I am returning to real estate with greater clarity about the kind of work I want to do and the kind of resource I want to be.

Roxboro: The Comfort of Being Known

Roxboro does not ask you to hurry.

Its rhythm is shaped by courthouse-square errands, familiar faces, church suppers, school events, lake weekends, and the steady work of people who care about what happens here.

It sits close enough to Durham for employment, culture, healthcare, and an occasional city evening, yet everyday life feels distinctly removed from the city’s pace. That distance is part of its appeal: room to breathe without feeling entirely disconnected.

What roots us here are the small things—local businesses where someone remembers your name, generations of families whose stories overlap, community organizations built by volunteers, and roads that lead quickly from Main Street to farmland and open sky.

Hyco and Mayo lakes add another layer to life in Person County. Hyco offers an active, social lake rhythm. Mayo feels quieter and more natural. Together, they remind us that Roxboro is both a small town and a gateway to water, woods, and long summer evenings.

Where the Past Still Lives

A local museum is more than a collection of old objects. It is a place where public history becomes personal.

At the Person County Museum of History, a photograph, familiar family name, household object, or room can connect a larger historical story to someone’s own memories.

That recognition is what makes local history meaningful. It reminds us that history did not happen only in famous cities or distant places. It happened in homes, schools, stores, farms, churches, and ordinary lives here in Person County.

The museum’s 2026 exhibit, Personalizing the Past, invites visitors to experience history through lived experience as part of the America 250 NC commemoration.

Learning to See Home

When I began gathering photographs for Living Near Durham NC, I expected to create a record of buildings and views.

Instead, the camera began teaching me where the story really lives.

It lives in the worn threshold of an old storefront. In a tobacco barn standing against an evening sky. In hydrangeas leaning over a fence. In courthouse windows, a shaded park bench, a mural that remembers an earlier downtown, and reflections moving across a lake.

Those details are easy to overlook when we are rushing through a place we already know.

A camera asks us to stop. It turns an ordinary road into light, texture, season, and memory.

The Market in Plain English

More Balance, More Need for Preparation

The North Carolina housing market has moved into more balanced territory.

According to the July 2026 report from NC REALTORS®, statewide inventory reached approximately six months. Active listings increased from the prior year, sales slowed, and the statewide median price remained steady.

What This Means for Buyers

Buyers may have more choices and a little more time to think than they did during the most frantic market years. Well-maintained and properly priced homes—especially in more approachable price ranges—can still receive quick attention.

What This Means for Sellers

Preparation matters. Condition, presentation, photography, and pricing must reflect the market that exists now, not the market of two or three years ago.
